This is the story of a construction company’s bid to save money by building a new construction townhome.
By Joe CiminoA $250 million project to build new homes for $350,000 was a win for one construction company and a setback for another.
A group of construction companies filed suit in the state of California on Wednesday to stop the building of a new home on the edge of an agricultural site, saying that they have been “devastated by the destruction of agricultural land” by the proposed development.
The lawsuit, filed by the San Francisco-based New Farm Homes, was filed in the federal court in San Francisco.
The group argued that the proposed new construction would not be built on agricultural land and that the property was in the process of being sold.
The project, called the “Farm House Project,” would include a 5,200-square-foot home on an approximately 300-acre tract.
The company would build a parking garage at the site, and a home-security system to keep the neighbors out.
The homes would be sold at auction, the lawsuit said.
New Farm Homes’ chief executive officer and founder, Kevin McWilliams, told ABC News that the company is “devoted to the protection of the environment and the health of the communities we serve.”
“We are not a corporate, one-man company.
We are a community-owned company,” McWilliams said.
“We believe the best thing we can do for our communities is to stand together and protect our environment and protect people’s health.”
A local developer, Mike Zorzi, said the company was “devasted” by what it saw as the government’s interference with the project and by the county’s approval of a $35 million sale of a similar project, which is now in the hands of another developer.
“I think the government was really trying to do whatever it could to shut down this project, and it was a very sad day,” Zorzzisaid.
Zorzi said the proposed project is one of about 100 that the county has approved in recent years, mostly for residential use, and he’s not sure how many homes have actually been built.
“There is an opportunity here to save a couple hundred dollars in construction costs and we are doing it,” he said.
“But we are also doing the right thing in terms of protecting our environment.”
